Millions of drivers 'too scared' to use motorways

Though accident statistics show that motorways are safer than other roads they remain a source of fear for drivers, to the extent that some avoid them altogether. A survey of AA members showed that one in 10 were worried enough to consider taking refresher lessons to build confidence for motorway driving.
The survey showed that young drivers and women are by far the least confident. Only 44% of drivers aged 18-24 felt at home on motorways. And in the first year after passing their test, one in 5 men and two in 5 women avoid motorways completely.
Even after they’ve three years driving under their belts, one in 10 men and one in 4 women did no motorway driving.
AA Driving School’s head of motorway driver development, Mark Peacock, said: ‘by steering clear of motorways drivers not only face a longer, slower journey, they are potentially putting themselves at greater risk on A-roads.'
